Safety and Security Update

Safety and security remain top-of-mind for many of us. While we’ve made important strides since the tragedy of October 7, our work continues—because our synagogue must be a place where everyone is both safe and feels safe.

At our February Board meeting, we had an encouraging update from our Security Advisory Committee, chaired by Past President Howard Cohen. The committee includes dedicated congregants with diverse backgrounds and a shared commitment to strengthening security at KBI.

Already, the committee is:

• Working with partners in Ottawa and beyond — meeting with security experts from the Jewish Federation of Ottawa, CIJA, Federation CJA in Montreal, and the Ottawa Police Service to build partnerships and share best practices. It is also collaborating with other Ottawa synagogues to exchange security insights.

• Reviewing our security guard program—defining key qualifications for commercial guards and building a roster of congregant volunteers to assist on Shabbat mornings. (If you can help out, please contact Marie at marie@kehillatbethisrael.com in the office!)

• Arranging security assessments—including a crime prevention audit by the Ottawa Police Service and a comprehensive review by a professional security firm. Their recommendations will strengthen our existing security measures and complement the planned site improvements we discussed at our January Town Hall.

I look forward to sharing more updates as we continue to enhance security and ensure KBI remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
